Bulky Waffle Hat

On Wednesday I mentioned that I was thinking about making a hat for my brother. By Thursday night I had moved from the idea of possible making a hat to selecting a pattern (Bulky Waffle Hat by Linda Suda). I pulled out some Wool of the Andes bulky from my stash and got to work…

…well, I tried to get to work, but I don’t have a pair of size 10.5 16 inch needles. I grabbed a pair of 9s instead and knit the largest size assuming it would work. I tossed it all in my knitting bag and headed to St. Louis.

Going down a needle size and up a pattern size worked out great. One thing that didn’t work? Forgetting a 40 inch needle to switch to magic loop at the decreases. Luckily my friend’s daughter likes colored pencils, so I grabbed them and told myself they were close enough to the needle size to work.

The pencils worked great, and I ended up with a hat I like a lot.

When I gave it to my brother he said “I already have a hat.” I had to make him take it at the end of our time together. I should know better to make a hat for someone who doesn’t care about knitting. It’s all OK though, as I now have less yarn in my stash.

I hope you were able to complete a project this weekend too.

WIP Wednesday: 45/52

I’ve had a busy week with knitting! I finished another hat, this one for myself. I’m happy to be done with hats for now.

The pattern is Sitka Spruce from Tin Can Knits. I like the look of it, but I found the stitching a little fiddley. I don’t know if that is because it was a difficult knit or because I have a cold making it hard to concentrate. I suspect it is the latter.

Now that I’m done with the hat I’m making a pair of matching mittens. I hope to finish the mittens quickly and move on to a sweater for Elliot.20181114_1335402546653718165785768.jpgA note on the yarn I’m using for this: yes, it is that bright. I don’t know why I bought fluorescent green yarn, but I think it is safe to assume I was either buying yarn on-line after two glasses of wine or it looked less bright on the website. I don’t hate the color, but I would normally not pick it. I keep losing hats, so I’m using this yarn (if I’m going to lose another hat I don’t want it to be made from yarn I adore).

Happy knitting!

Elf Hats

It’s amazing how much knitting a person can get done when they are watching the Hawkeye game.20181111_0845223324469343946049205.jpgThe elf hats were nice and quick, and now I’m back to knitting with natural fibers. I’m about to cast on a hat because I lost my Gretel Tam again. I am going to start a Sitka Spruce hat from Tin Can Knits as soon as I sit down to knit again. Hopefully I don’t lose or felt this hat.

Uh Oh

I accidentally felted one of my favorite hats. It must have been under of my sweatshirt when I picked it up and put it in the laundry. I didn’t notice it until I was folding the laundry. It still fits, it just looks weird. It is not the cool, slouchy hat it once was.

New Hats

I finished the Little Boxes hats for Audrey and Elliot yesterday. They both love having a hat that matches Daddy’s.20181028_1151397766422218341926674.jpg

I didn’t adapt the pattern much. I did not adjust the number of cast on stitches. The hat is stretch enough it works in the adult size, and this way they will be able to wear them for several years. I reduced the number of pattern repeats by 1/3. 20181028_1151425638508863825725659.jpg

I hope that there isn’t much need for warm wool hats for another month, but it is the end of October and this is Iowa, so we will probably need them before too long.

I hope you are enjoying your Sunday. I’m now off to watch football and drink tea and knit obsessively.
