October was a busy month, but I managed to read five books.
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I picked up this book on Laura’s recommendation. After reading this beautiful book I think I owe her a beer. This book is filled with essays on the earth, Native American traditions, and the environment. This book has a permanent spot on my bookshelf. I five this book five stars.
The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish. What I knew about Tiffany Haddish before I read this book; she is funny on talk shows. What I know now: Tiffany Haddish is an incredibly smart, strong, and funny woman. I adore her. This book is funny and serious and I want to buy Tiffany Haddish a beer just for being great. I give this book four out of five stars.
It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey. I picked this book up after a friend sent me a text describing the book as Alexis Rose goes to the Pacific Northwest and falls for a crabber. This is a very cute, very funny romance novel. I recommended it to my mom because I found it so enjoyable. Then I had to call her and rescind that recommendation because this book gets FILTHY. I still loved the book, I just don’t want my mom to read it and know I enjoy reading smut. I give this book four out of five stars.
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling. There are times when you want to read a seasonal romance novel in October, and this book is great for that. A witch with a broken heart mixes vodka and witchcraft to jokingly put a curse on her ex. He comes back to town and they need to reverse the curse. It was enjoyable and fun, but not mind blowing by any means. I give this book three out of five stars.
Christmas on the Island by Jenny Colgan. There are times when I just need a Jenny Colgan fix. This was one of those times. In classic Colgan fashion this book was predictable and cute. I liked it. I give it three out of five stars.
Did you read anything good this month? I currently have about 8 books on my nightstand, as well as a few shelves in the library that I want to read.
I have Braiding Sweetgrass, but right now I’m on a streak of reading a few pages of a book, putting it down, and forgetting about it, no matter how amazing it is. I have a stack of books on my nightstand, mostly nonfiction and self-help. There is no remedy in sight.

I have a huge stack on my nightstand right now. It’s getting out of hand. Braiding Sweetgrass is great because you can read each chapter on its own.

I read Braiding Sweetgrass several years ago, and then heard Robin Kimmerer speak at a conference. I’d give her 10 out of 5 stars!!! She’s great.
If I have time later today, I’m going to start a Granola Recommended reading list; you always have at least a couple in your list I know I’d enjoy, and I’m always looking for new to me authors. Thank you for performing this service!

Oh goodie, more reading recommendations! I’ll take that beer. Is there a spot in Des Moines that has some good Iowan beer?
