Do you have a niddy noddy? It is a tool for winding skeins of yarn. It is very helpful if you a a spinner. I’m not a spinner, but Jess, Ivy, and I are exchanging mini skein Advent calendars this year, so I thought it would be nice to make some mini skeins from my yarn.
Now, niddy noddies are not expensive tools. You can get one for under $20. But why would you buy one when you can make one in under a half hour? Using the instructions I found on The Chilly Dog I was able to make niddy noddy with three lengths of PVC pipe to make 1 yard, 1 1/2 yard, and 2 yard skeins.

I now want to make more knitting tools. Or at least use a hacksaw more often. I think a blanket ladder project is in my future, but that may wait until Kirsten moves, because I think a blanket ladder making party is an idea that needs to happen and she really needs to be there.
Have you ever made a knitting tool?
Seems like you need a spinning wheel now. A lady at our Guild made her own, one of the kids bike wheels, wood and hacksaw and I’m sure you could rustle one up 😉

I want to make one. I almost sent John the directions for one, but I want to try to make it myself.

I just ordered another swifton etsy, lol. I’m a bit uncomfortable with saws right now!🤣🤣🤣 I did ask my husband to make me one, but he’s been working alot of hours, so not much down time and I didn’t want to wait.

That is totally understandable! I wouldn’t even want to look at a saw if I were you.

That’s so cool! When I visited Kenya I saw the ladies at Kenana Knitters made their own spinning wheels. I’m sure you can do it. I have never made my own knitting tools, other than a cd and dowel spindle which was terrible.

That is good to know, as I was debating trying to make one. I am thinking 2022 will be my make a spinning wheel year.

That is awesome! What a great tool, and very handy of you to have made it yourself! I have knitted with chopsticks for demonstration purposes, but I can’t claim to have made any knitting tools.

I have made a fiber-arts tool before… a Niddy Noddy! I made one out of dowel rods and another out of pipes like yours. My umbrella swift had one of it’s wood pieces break so I used a popsicle stick and duct tape to splint it. The only other things that I have made is a whole bunch of stitch markers and a couple of project bags…

I fixed my umbrella swift with duct tape too. I am glad I’m not the only Niddy Noddy maker.

I think that knitters who are adventurous are good innovators. 🙂
