Happy Birthday Kirsten!

On Wednesday nights I sit down with my knitting and a glass of wine and Skype my best friend. She lives about 350 miles away, and chatting away on the computer makes it feel like we are actually hanging out.

Tonight, while we were chatting, she mentioned that her birthday was yesterday. Did I call her? No. Did I text her? No. Did I realize it was her birthday until she mentioned it? No. I apologized. She was understanding and doesn’t even seem annoyed.

I’ve known Kirsten for 27 years. We met when we were in high school. We were in the same sorority at The University of Iowa (Yay! Hawkeyes and Alpha Xi Delta!!). We hung our sparadoically in our twenties, as our twenties were all about establishing careers and drinking. She moved back to St. Louis when we were in our thirties and we started hanging out more. Since having kids it is rare that we go two months without seeing each other.

I am so lucky to have such a wonderful friend. I can call her and talk about anything with her. I know she will listen without judgement and give me a solid opinion and advice. I dream of her moving to the Des Moines area so I can see her every week.

I am embarrassed I missed her birthday. I am happy I can tell you how great she is.

Have you ever forgotten an important birthday? Please share it with me in the comments to I feel like less of a flake.

  1. One of my best friends, who I’ve known since I was an au pair in Michigan so since I was 19, her birthday is Christmas Eve…I can’t tell you how many years I have forgotten to post her birthday card with her Christmas card!

  2. I never remember one friend’s birthday. It’s in October which is a lost month in my year. September I’m on top of things because of school starting. November is the holiday panic. I just get way too relaxed in October.

I put all birthdays in my iPhone calendar it reminds me a week ahead otherwise yeah but I’d probably forget them too. But I bet she didn’t mind you’ve had a lot on your plate lately.

  4. My homegirls and I are spaced out (not as much as you two are) also even though we live in the same state. Plus two of us are nurses who work opposite weekends. I forgot my husband’s birthday last year! I thought I had one more day.
