Consumerism via Thrifting

I’ve been trying to reduce my consumption this year. I’m donating clothes and household items often. I’m trying to get things out of my home. I’ve embraced the Make, Thrift, Mend lifstyle. And yet….

I think I’ve developed a trifting problem. I love a good handbag, and now that I’m diaper bag free I’ve been changing them up often. I’m also dealing with a bit of depression over being diagnosed as lactose intolerant and fructose intolerant, so my defenses were low this morning when I stumbled across this Kate Spade ice cream and popsicle handbag. It will be perfect next summer, and it doesn’t have a top zipper so I can throw knitting projects in willy nilly. The irony is I’ll be carrying around a bag covered in treats I can’t eat.

After finding the cute bag I found a pair of metallic heels that I love. I normally wear Chucks in the winter and Chacos in the summer. On date nights I’ll class up my footwear with Danskos or cowboy boots. I blame years of watching Sex and the City, because when I found this pair of Christian Louboutin shoes in my size I couldn’t walk away. They are comfortable and fancy, and something I would never buy brand new. I might need to make a new dress to go with them.

I’m a Miranda with Carrie shoes.

Even though I splurged at the consignment shop, I spent less than I would have had I wandered around Target in a funk. I apologize in advance for making you look at my new shoes the next time I see you. I will be probably be wearing them.

  1. I never pass up a bargain at the thrift shop! You did the right thing:) Both are spectacular!
Both of my children are lactose intolerant. It is tough particularly in ice cream season which is all year round in New England. They both enjoy Lactaid ice cream. My daughter says the chocolate is divine.

  2. In the UK we have some brilliant vegan ice creams now and Ben & Jerry’s do a vegan range that must be in US I’d think, Definitely nicer than the lactose free ones I’ve tried. I’ve not heard of a fructose intolerance before, does that mean you can’t have fresh fruit? I love the ‘I’m Miranda in Carrie shoes’. I’m like Miranda, but in her sensible commute to work flat shoes.

    1. I still need to meet with my doctor to find out all of what fructose intolerance means, but I have trouble digesting anything with fructose, so fruit and processed foods with high fructose corn syrup. I think it also means I can’t have beer. I’ll look for the vegan Ben & Jerry’s, if it is half as good as their regular ice cream it will be wonderful.

  3. Those shoes are fabulous! I can’t wait to see the dress you make. I feel like thrifting is perfectly fine consumerism. I feel you on the treats you can’t eat. Sometimes I feel like the universe is conspiring to take away all my favorite foods, and yet I am still overweight. So unfair.

  4. Wow – you got some amazing finds there! I wouldn’t have passed them up either. Good for you for jumping on them! There are lots of good options out there for people who are lactose and fructose intolerant. You will be able to enjoy tasty things – mark my words! It will just take a bit of research and trial and error, but you will figure out.

  5. I’m so sorry you got diagnosed as lactose and fructose intolerant. I myself, am lactose intolerant. The good news is that, as someone mentioned above, there are some really fabulous lactose free ice creams out there. They might contain fructose though… errrgggg. Also, if you are a coffee drinker, most creamers are lactose free. 🙂 Lots of AGED natural cheeses are low in lactose. Chihuahua cheese (yes pronounced like the dog) is 99.95% lactose free and it is great in dips, on sandwiches etc… 🙂 So is Colby, Monterey, Pepperjack, and Swiss (so most white cheeses). Hope this helps. 🙂

    1. Thank you! I have been living without lactose for a while, as I’ve assumed I am lactose intolerant. The fructose is really frustrating, I can’t tolerate anything with corn syrup, so that has cut out the really good sorbets I’ve been enjoying. Thank goodness for aged cheese!
