I have several projects on the needles. I have even more I need to get started on. And yet…..
I have one skein of Yarn Geek in the Dr. Nancy Grace Roman colorway. She is known as Mother of the Hubble and the yarn looks a lot like the Milky Way in the hank, and more purple in the cake. It is sparkly and delightful.
I had been planning on making a hitchhiker, which my friend assures me is OK to make with one normal skein instead of the 1 1/2 skein used in the pattern. But now I’m thinking a sockhead cowl would be a better use for it.
What do you think I should make? What do you like to make when you have a stunning skein of fingering weight yarn? I usually make socks, but I think I should branch out.

Okay, two things: 1) I did not get to see the Darwin yarn project this weekend! And 2) Have you made a Hitchhiker before? Some of mine have turned out a little short, so I prefer to have extra yarn on hand. Obviously YMMV but I would vote for cowl!

I had the yarn with me, I can’t believe I forgot to show you. I think I’m going to make the cowl. I’m more likely to use it.

Gorgeous! I think the scarf will show off the yarn better than a cowl will. For myself, when I have a fabulous yarn, I nearly always make a shawl. If necessary, I choose a complementary color yarn to extend the yardage.

I usually don’t use fingering weight shawls, but I wear cowls all winter. I think cowl will win.

Have you considered Miss Winkle by Martina Behm. I’ve done it with 1 skein. It’s a fun knit. Sockhead cowl would be a great option too.

Those colours look to good to be hidden away as socks. Definitely a cowl or scarf. It will look amazing either way.

I went with the sockhead cowl, because I think a mindless project will be perfect for the upcoming holiday season. I can have a few glasses of wine and still knit stockinette in the round.

I have yarn that I think would be even more perfect for Miss Winkle, so I’m waiting to knit that shawl with that pattern. Isn’t it a cute one?

That is a really good idea! I like how you think. I am going to make a cowl, partially because I think it will take a long time, which will give me more time to paw at the yarn.

This time of year I like to make warm mittens with open thumbs for texting etc. .

The yarn looks lovely. I’ve made 3 hitchhikers and would say I only wear the 2 I made with homespun yarn that is very soft and cosy. The fingering weight sock yarn one I made has nylon in and doesn’t cut it as against neck worthy.

That is very good advice. I think I’ll wait to make it until I have something extra special. Maybe someday I’ll even learn how to spin.
